Watch Sacha Baron Cohen “Kill” An Old Lady

Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen wore none of his signature costume or disguises when he appeared at the BAFTA LA Britannia awards ceremony this week; but that didn’t stop him from pulling an epic prank that left the unsuspecting crowd both terrified and in hysterics.

Cohen was there to accept the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. It was presented to him by Salma Hayek, and a wheelchair-bound woman identified as Grace Cullington. Hayek tells the audience that Cullington appeared in Chaplin’s City Lights in 1931 when she was five-years-old, and that the nonagenarian is now the last surviving performer to have worked with Chaplin. A photo still from the film is displayed, suggesting Cullington is the little girl seen.

When Cohen arrives on stage, Cullington presents him with a cane, saying in a feeble voice that it was Chaplin’s from City Lights. Cohen gives her a kiss on the cheek, eliciting “awwws” from the audience.

Cohen then launches into a Chaplin impersonation, waddling around the stage; but when he leans on the cane, it snaps. Cohen falls onto Cullington’s wheelchair, sending her flying off the dais.

The audience gasps audibly. But as Cohen leaps off the stage and begins performing mouth-to-mouth on the woman, they may have begun to realize that it was all a hoax.

“Cullington” was actually a stuntwoman in age makeup.

Some video also shows Cohen retuning to the stage to accept the award, to nervous laughter from the onlookers.

“This is obviously a tragedy,” he says, “but on the bright side, what a great way to go.”

Cohen is certainly now stranger to outrageous public appearances, but they usually occur while he is more overtly in character as one of his onscreen identities. After a lengthy back-and-forth with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cohen was “invited” to the 2013 Oscars as his character from The Dictator. Upon arriving on the red carpet, he spilled the ashes of Kim Jong-Il on Ryan Seacrest.
