Kate Hudson Confesses In Harper’s Bazaar: “I Can’t Afford to Buy Red Carpet Dresses! We Borrow!”

Ever become jealous when you watch one of your favorite actresses walk down the red carpet in a stellar gown by Vera Wang, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Balmain, Versace, Marchesa, Jason Woo, Stella McCartney, or some other designer you know you couldn’t afford? Well, don’t be.

According to Kate Hudson, it turns out most stars can’t afford them either. In the December/January issue of Harper’s BAZAAR, the 34-year-old actress reveals that she has trouble handing over her credit card for her own party threads.

“People think we own all these dresses, but we borrow them,” Hudson exclaims. “I can’t afford to buy that stuff. There are certain things I splurge on, but it’s very rare, especially when you have two kids and school tuition. I’m not a big high-end fashion shopper. I wish I could but the truth is things are just so expensive. Before Isabel Marant was a million dollars and famous, I used to go to her store in Paris and go crazy, it was so affordable.”

The Glee alum says that although she earns a pretty penny starring in films, she learned how to spend her money wisely from her famous mom Goldie Hawn. “My mom wasn’t a big shopper for us,” Hudson shares. “I think [she] wanted to instill that in us even though we grew up in a really privileged and lucky lifestyle.”

Other than her mom, Hudson does look to other A-list actresses for fashion inspiration. “I like people who are true to themselves: Rooney Mara, I always look forward to seeing; I like her style,” Hudson reveals. “Carey Mulligan always wears interesting things, Kerry Washington… No clothes? I like that, too.”
