Does Jay Z Want Robinson Cano To Sign With The Mets?

There’s a pretty good chance that Robinson Cano is not going to end up back with the New York Yankees next season. At this point in his career, Cano is looking for a gigantic $300 million contract. And having been burned by a similar contract that they gave to Alex Rodriguez a few years back, the thought is that the Yankees will not give the same kind of deal to Cano. So apparently, Cano’s agent Jay Z is already starting to look elsewhere in an effort to get Cano the kind of money he’s looking for. And by “elsewhere,” we mean right across town.

According to the New York Post, Jay Z met with several representatives from the New York Mets last night in order to talk to them about the possibility of signing Cano to a contract this offseason. The Mets don’t really seem like they’re in a position to sign Cano to the deal he wants right now. But Jay Z likely sees the value in Cano staying in New York City next season, so he reportedly requested a meeting with the Mets just to gauge their interest in the second baseman. Jay Z likely also requested a meeting to show the Yankees that he will be speaking to other MLB teams this offseason about Cano. So if they want him, they’re going to need to be prepared to make a move soon. They also need to be ready to give him the money he’s looking for.

At this point, we don’t think that Jay Z actually wants Cano to sign with the Mets. We think that him requesting a meeting with the team was a ploy to try and get a reaction out of the Yankees. But we still can’t see the Yankees paying Cano $300 million at this point in his career. The old Yankees would have done it in a heartbeat. But in recent years, big contracts haven’t yielded big results for the Yankees. So we don’t expect Jay Z’s meeting with the Mets to be the last meeting he has with an MLB team other than the Yankees. It’ll be interesting to see how Jay Z handles the situation and what leverage he’s able to gain in the coming months.

Do you think Jay Z really wants Robinson Cano to sign with the Mets? Or was he just trying to get the Yankees’ attention by having dinner with Mets representatives last night?
