Did Kanye West Make The Right Decision By Signing A Sneaker Deal With adidas?

Have you been patiently waiting for the release of the Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Red October” sneaker? If so, we have some bad news for you. Nike will not be releasing the sneaker anytime soon. In fact, they’re probably not going to release it at all now that Kanye West has reportedly jumped ship and decided to sign a new sneaker deal with—drumroll, please—adidas. During an interview on Hot 97 yesterday, Mr. West talked about his time with Nike and said that the Swoosh would not pay him royalties for his sneakers. And because he has a daughter now, he doesn’t want to run with Nike anymore. So he’s taking his talents to adidas and starting a new sneaker line there.

“The old me, without a daughter, would have taken the Nike deal because I just love Nikes so much,” he said. “But the new me, with a daughter, takes the adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my family.”

He also explained why Nike wouldn’t give him royalties for his Air Yeezy sneakers.

“Nike told me, ‘We can’t give you royalties because you’re not a professional athlete,’” he said. “I told them, ‘I’ll go to the Garden and play one-on-no one.’ I’m a performance athlete.”

So Kanye is now Team adidas. But is that really the right move for him at this stage? Something tells us that he’ll make the most of his relationship with adidas and release some great sneakers. But something that Kanye said doesn’t sit well with us. He mentioned that the “old” Kanye would have taken the Nike deal because of his love for Nike sneakers. But he says that he’s going with adidas now because they’re willing to pay him more. And that doesn’t seem to fall in line with what Kanye is all about. Since when is money more important to Kanye than his vision? To us, it sounds like he signed with whoever was willing to pay him more. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it just doesn’t sound like something Kanye would do.

Regardless of why he signed with adidas, we fully expect him to release some dope sneakers in the future. But Kanye and Kim Kardashian are filthy rich. So we hope that every decision he makes moving forward doesn’t revolve around money.
