Gal Gadot Cast As Wonder Woman In Upcoming Man Of Steel Sequel
Israeli model and actress Gal Gadot has been confirmed as Wonder Woman in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel. She will star alongside Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman; and her casting raises questions about what other DC Comics superheroes may appear in the film.
“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe,” said director , in a statement. “Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
Gadot is best known for her recurring role in the Fast & Furious franchise as Gisele Harabo. She’s also appeared in the Tom Cruise action comedy Knight and Day, and had a hilarious cameo in the Tina Fey/Steve Carrell action comedy Date Night.
Gadot was named Miss Israel in 2004.
The casting of the Superman sequel had previously stirred controversy when Affleck was announced as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Especially in the wake of Christian Bale‘s iconic trilogy as Batman, the internet responded harshly to the news.
Considering that, I’m a little surprised that Warner Bros. went with a lesser known actress, instead of trying to bolster the film’s early buzz with an already-known fan favorite. Of course, I don’t think anyone will complain about this talented beauty donning the red corset and lasso. But Bond girl Olga Kurylenko was also reported as competing for the role; and Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe Retaliation, Red Dawn) might have been considered, as she starred in a recent famously-doomed pilot for a Wonder Woman TV series.
The inclusion of Wonder Woman also bolsters rumors that the film will become a full blown Justice League movie. The Flash is rumored to make an appearance as well.
