Should Derrick Rose Really Be Talking About Making A Comeback This Season?

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose isn’t 100 percent convinced that he can’t make a comeback at the end of the 2013-14 NBA season. Even though the Bulls have already said that Rose won’t be back on the basketball court until next year due to the knee surgery that he underwent last week to repair a torn meniscus, D-Rose talked to reporters yesterday and said otherwise. Specifically, he said that while he probably won’t be back with the Bulls this season, he could make a comeback during the 2014 NBA Playoffs if his knee feels up to it.

“If I’m healthy and the situation is right, I’m going to be back playing,” he said very matter-of-factly on Thursday afternoon. “If I’m healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course I’ll be out there playing.”

But is that really what Rose should be thinking about right now? Bulls fans will appreciate the fact that he wants to get back onto the court badly. His words might even give them some hope this season and force them to pay closer attention to the team than they would if Rose came right out and said that he was finished for the year. But last season, Rose was healthy at the end of the year but chose not to play because he wasn’t mentally prepared for it following surgery on his ACL the previous summer. And he caught a ton of flack from fans for not playing. So if he happens to be healthy at the end of this season, how can he not play after what he just said to reporters? He’s basically put himself in a position where he’s going to have to get out there on the court if he’s healthy prior to end of the current season.

Rose was just speaking his mind on Thursday when he said that he wants to get back to playing basketball ASAP. But in this particular instance, he would have been better off saying something cliche like, “I just want to get back to my team as soon as I can.” It would have been the best thing for himself, the Bulls, and their fans.
