Chinese Man Kills Himself In Mall When Girlfriend Won’t Stop Shopping

She shopped until he dropped. A Chinese man threw himself seven stories to his death in a mall this week after his girlfriend insisted on visiting one more store.

Tao Hsiao, 38, was with his girlfriend in a shopping mall in Jiangsu province, north of Shanghai on the eastern coast. Closed-circuit security cameras show that the couple had been there for five hours before he confronted the woman, demanding to leave. But Tao’s girlfriend said she wanted to go to one more store, a shoe shop with a sale going on.

Witnesses described the ensuing “heated argument”: “He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that [sic] she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more. She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas…”

Tao then threw the armful of shopping bags he had over the rail, before jumping over himself. He reportedly crashed through a stall and many Christmas decorations as he fell, but did not injure anyone else.

Photos show Tao lying on the ground below as groups assemble above and around his body (WARNING: Graphic).

The Mayo Clinic warns that the holidays often aggravate stress and depression for many. To counter this, they offer several tips, including setting aside differences until a more appropriate time, making a shopping budget and sticking to it, learning to say no, and setting aside time for yourself.
