RETWEET THIS!!!!!! Study Finds Uppercase Drives Retweets

A new study offers insight into what traits are shared by messages on Twitter that are heavily retweeted. And the results show it’s basically everything that makes tweets annoying.

Competitive tracking group TrackMaven looked at over 1.7 million tweets from over 1,400 accounts to compile data about when people tweet, and what and when they retweet. The study found that most tweets are sent Tuesday-Thursday, and the most popular time is the middle of the day (during lunch hours or breaks, presumably).

But interestingly, these are not the most popular times for retweets. That would be Sundays, in between 10pm and midnight.

As for content, capital letters showed a strong correlation with retweets. So did exclamation points (six or more), and hashtags. Despite signs of growing hashtag burnout, the study showed a sharp spike for tweets with 11 or more hashtags.

TrackMavens data could show that a fact long known in the real world has simply expanded into another form of digital communication: that volume and confidence is better, even when it’s wrong. Numerous studies have shown that stating an opinion loudly and confidently often creates the perception of leadership and inspires fervent agreement in others, even (or especially) when the speaker is wrong. And a recent study indeed found that confidence is more important than accuracy in gaining followers and professional credibility on Twitter.
