Does The NFL Need To Overhaul Their Referees’ Review System?

In 2013, there is absolutely no reason for NFL referees to make any mistakes. Or, at least, no reason for them to make mistakes and then have those mistakes upheld by instant replay. However, that’s exactly what has happened this season, as NFL referees have made a series of poor calls—and then botched calls during instant replay reviews—that have changed the outcomes of games. It’s understandable that referees would make some mistakes. But again, it’s 2013! There is all kinds of technology available that can help referees make the right call every single time they step on the football field. So why doesn’t the NFL do something to help them out?

It sounds like the league might finally be coming around to the idea of improving their review system. Specifically, it sounds like the league is going to start using a centralized main office to make all calls pertaining to reviews. This would take a lot of decisions out of the hands of referees and help ensure that all games are being called fairly. Additionally, it would put an extra set of eyes on NFL games. And that would allow for all calls that are made to be 99.99999 percent correct. It seems like this is something that the NFL should have done a long time ago.

Will the centralized system work and help eliminate referee mistakes from the game of football? That really remains to be seen. But it’s worth a try for the NFL. At this point, there have been enough mistakes this season for the NFL to take a look at their instant replay system and make changes accordingly. So we hope that they do make this one big change and help referees to get calls right all the time. It will improve the games themselves by moving the review process along a little bit more quickly. It will cut down on the number of controversies that have plagued the NFL this season. And, most importantly, it will help the NFL make sure that they’re getting as many calls as possible correct. It won’t be perfect. But it will be a step in that direction.
