Check Out The First Trailer For 22 Jump Street

Sony has just released the first trailer for 22 Jump Street, and it looks like Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back for more undercover hijinx and bromance. It also shows that the filmmakers are completely aware that they are, improbably, making a sequel to a successful movie about an 1980′s TV show.

At the very start of the trailer, Nick Offerman (playing Hill and Tatum’s commanding officer), gives a rant that is clearly intended as commentary on the sequel itself: “Ladies, nobody gave a shit about the Jump Street reboot, but you got lucky. So now this department has invested a lot of money to make sure that Jump Street keeps going.”

21 Jump Street was a surprise hit of last year, not only grossing over $200,000,000 worldwide, but earning praise for its teen movie satire, action-filled comedy, and the sympathetic and crazy performances of both Tatum and Hill (case in point: Tatum jumping through a gong in the band room while high on drugs).

The original had a budget of $40 million. Presumably, the sequel will have a larger budget, “to make sure that Jump Street keeps going.”

The trailer suggests that 22 Jump Street won’t depart too far from 21, as Schmidt and Jenko (Hill and Tatum) will once again infiltrate a school to break up a drug ring, while navigating their own friendship. But this time, it’s college.

The trailer even brings back several cast members from the original, including Ice Cube, Rob Riggle, and Dave Franco (though love interest Brie Larson has announced she won’t appear in the film).
