Virgil Abloh, Kanye West’s Style Adviser, Launches His Own Streetwear Fashion Label Called Off-White
Virgil Abloh has friends in high places.
The Chicago native and super-nerdy blogger has created a name for himself as Kanye West‘s style adviser. Over the years, Abloh has created graphics for Hood by Air, served on the creative team for West’s debut fashion line Donda West, and even designed his own collection Pyrex Vision, which quickly sold out in stores from America to Paris. Now, Abloh is flexing his style muscles with his debut clothing line Off-White.
“Streetwear has a one-trick-ponyness to it,” Abloh told Style.com. “I want to give my point of view and merge street sensibilities in a proper fashion context. I think that if I can merge the two, it’ll make something interesting. It’s about the washed nature of clothes, the relaxedness. That’s what I love, to bring a Ralph [Lauren] take back into streetwear. Streetwear is generally brand-new. It’s fresh out of the box, you wear it once, it becomes trendy, then you get rid of it. My parents are from Ghana, and I grew up in Chicago, but for some reason, this lifestyle, shabby chic—it’s grown [on me] since I got older.”
Off-White‘s first collection for Spring 2014 is titled “Youth Will Always Win” and was cut and sewn in Italy.
“It’s really that,” he says of the name. “I think that’s what [defines] this generation…if people are really paying attention, they are interdisciplinary and they can jump into the conversation at any point. My team is talented kids that have that same spirit. They’re excited to give ideas across any platform.”
