Has Kanye West Really Designed 20 Different Sneakers For adidas Already?

Kanye West has wasted absolutely no time getting to work with adidas. The ink hasn’t even dried on the reported $10 million deal that he signed with the Three Stripes recently. And yet, ‘Ye claims that he has already designed almost two dozen sneakers for both men and women. It’s unlikely that all 20 sneakers will make it to retail. But during a recent radio interview with Chicago’s Morning Riot, Mr. West talked about how he traveled to the adidas main headquarters over in Germany recently and started designing.

“We designed the entire women’s collection,” he revealed. “We designed the entire men’s collection. And we designed 20 shoes. We coming in September and it’s about to be a paradigm shift.”

It all sounds so…exciting. But should we temper our excitement just a tad? After all, Kanye literally just did a deal with adidas. So it seems like it would be impossible for him to already have 20 sneakers in the can. Twenty rough sketches of different sneakers that he’s interested in designing? Sure. But it felt like it took Kanye, like, six months to design each Nike Yeezy that he created. So how in the world did he manage to design 20 adidas sneakers in a few weeks? He’s good. But he can’t be that good, can he?

The truth is that Kanye is probably doing a little bit of posturing here to build up the hype surrounding the adidas brand. That’s part of why adidas hired him. But we also believe that Kanye is going to go extra hard with his adidas collection, if for no other reason than to show the world—and, more specifically, Nike—that he’s one hell of a sneaker designer. So we’re excited to see what kind of sneakers Kanye is going to release in September. 2014 is going to be a big year for Kanye when it comes to sneakers—and we can’t wait to see what he’s going to do during it.
