Why Aren’t The Dallas Cowboys “America’s Team” Anymore?

For years and years and years now, the Dallas Cowboys have been called “America’s Team.” They’ve been called that because the Cowboys have fans in Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, and, well, everywhere. The success that the Cowboys had back in the 1980s and 1990s helped them gain a loyal fan base from all different parts of the country. And as a result of that, they’ve billed themselves as “America’s Team.”

So we’re a little bit surprised to hear that the Cowboys are not actually all that beloved after all. The truth is that while the Cowboys do have fans from all over the country, they also have their fair share of haters. And according to a recent poll that called for 741 registered voters to reveal their least favorite team in the NFL, about 23 percent of people named the Cowboys as their least favorite team in the league. 23 percent! The only other team that came even remotely close to the Cowboys was the Chicago Bears, who received 13 percent of the “least favorite team” vote. It’s shocking to say the least, especially when you consider how many fans the Cowboys have.

So why are they so hated? It’s hard to tell. The poll didn’t ask people to reveal why they hate the Cowboys. But if we had to guess, owner Jerry Jones and his big mouth have a lot to do with it. Tony Romo has a lot to do with it, too. And frankly, the fact that the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since 1996 doesn’t help, either. The truth is that America loves winners. And when you’re not winning championships—or, hell, at the very least, winning playoff games!—America is not going to love you.

For proof of that, all you need to do is look at America’s favorite team right now. That team? The Denver Broncos, who are one of the best teams in the NFL this season. Fourteen percent of Americans said that the Broncos are their favorite team at the moment. So does that make them America’s new team? Eh, sure. But come next year, it’ll probably change. And who knows? Maybe the Cowboys will reclaim the title and become “America’s Team” again. But for now, they can no longer call themselves that—and that must kill Jerry Jones.
