Do You Agree With The Pope’s Stance On The Children Of Gay Couples?

There’s a reason why Pope Francis was named the “Person of the Year” by Time magazine at the end of 2013. Although his reign as Pope has been relatively short thus far, he has done a lot to change the way that people view the Catholic Church. Specifically, Pope Francis has chosen not to treat gay people as outcasts and, instead, has spoken out in a positive tone about gay and lesbian people throughout the world.

“If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will,” he asked last summer, “who am I to judge?”

That attitude has earned Pope Francis a ton of praise from both Catholics and non-Catholics and has changed the way that some people look at Catholicism. But the Pope isn’t done being revolutionary in his thinking. Late last year, he actually came out and spoke at length about how the Catholic church plans to deal with the children of gay couples and those who come from broken homes. The transcripts from a speech that he gave to the Catholic Union of Superiors General in November were released over the weekend and revealed that the Pope has given a lot of thought to the issue.

“On an educational level, gay unions raise challenges for us today which for us are sometimes difficult to understand,” he said. “The number of children in schools whose parents have separated is very high…How can we proclaim Christ to a generation that is changing?”

The Pope does not have the answer. But one thing that he did mention during his speech is that one of his goals is to be as inclusive as possible when it comes to this generation.

“We must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them,” he said.

In other words, it sounds like he wants Catholics to be welcoming to these children and not push them away. This is obviously a very controversial stand for the Pope to take, especially when you consider the history of the Catholic Church. But it’s yet another reason why so many people like what Pope Francis is all about.

Do you like what he’s saying and doing when it comes to both gay people and the children that they are raising? Let us know in the comments section below.
