Who Wants To Wear A Pair Of These Airwalk JIM Tennis Sneakers That Look Like Tennis Balls?

In 2014, no material is off limits when it comes to creating a pair of sneakers. Seriously. At this point, we have seen just about every single material under the sun slapped onto the sides of sneakers. Especially now that custom kicks have become all the rage, weird materials are a big part of the sneaker game. But 20 years ago, it was not like this. Most sneakers were created for function, not for fun, so sneaker companies shied away from creating anything that was too crazy. After all, if it was only going to sell to a handful of people, why create a really crazy sneaker?

That kind of thinking didn’t apply to Airwalk, though. True, they did have some relatively basic sneakers. But they also released the Airwalk JIM Tennis sneaker back in 1993 that was, in a lot of ways, ahead of its time. It looked like a gigantic tennis ball and used the same materials and color of a tennis ball to achieve that look. To say that it was extreme would be an understatement. But despite the crazy look of the sneaker, it was a favorite amongst sneaker fanatics and, to this day, is still one of the best sneakers that Airwalk ever released. And because it’s been 20 years now since the JIM Classic was first released, Airwalk is celebrating by—what else?—re-releasing it! That’s right, the JIM Classic can once again be yours.

You’re not going to have to pay an arm and a leg or go hunting around for this sneaker, either. It’s currently available for just $70 through Airwalk’s online store. Would you wear this in 2014—or do you think that it’s a sneaker that Airwalk should have left in the past? We’re not so sure we’re going to run out and pick up a pair of these immediately. But the nostalgia factor is nice, so we might be convinced to snag a pair before the end of 2014. Either way, kudos to Airwalk for thinking outside of the box back in 1993 and coming up with something this cool.
