Why Did Jay Z Just Decide To Sign C.C. Sabathia To Roc Nation Sports?
And another one! Over the course of the last year, Jay Z has signed a handful of different athletes to his Roc Nation Sports management company. From Kevin Durant to Robinson Cano, the rapper-turned-sports-agent has been doing everything in his power to build up his stable of athletes. But it doesn’t appear as though he’s done.
In the next month or two, Jay Z is expected to sign a bunch of guys who will be entering the 2014 NFL Draft. But until then, Jay is seemingly sticking with baseball players, following the success that he just enjoyed thanks to Cano, who signed a massive 10-year, $240 million deal with the Seattle Mariners late last year. So Jay just signed—drumroll, please!—New York Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia to Roc Nation Sports. He posted a photo of him and Sabathia signing a contract last night.
Sabathia is different than a lot of the other guys who have signed with Roc Nation Sports, though. Unlike Cano, Durant, or any of the NFL prospects, Sabathia still has three years left on his current MLB contract. He also has an endorsement deal with Jordan Brand in place as well as deals with Pepsi and Subway. So it’s pretty clear that Legacy Sports Group, the company that Sabathia was working with before, did a pretty solid job with him. It’s also unclear how Jay Z will be able to help him further, especially since there aren’t a lot of obvious contract negotiations or endorsement deals in Sabathia’s near future.
Jay Z may be taking a calculated risk here, though. Sabathia is still the most popular pitcher that the Yankees have. And the Yankees should return to form during the 2014 MLB season and possibly even contend for a title. So maybe Jay is thinking that, should the Yankees take the title, he’ll be able to get Sabathia out there even more than he already is and find new marketing opportunities for him.
Or maybe Jay doesn’t want to do anything too dramatic with Sabathia. Maybe he just wants him on the team because he’s become one of the faces of the Yankees over the last couple of years. Whatever the case, Sabathia is riding with Roc Nation Sports right now—and Jay is, once again, going to have the opportunity to show what he can do with a high-profile athlete like Sabathia.
