Are You Surprised That adidas Just Signed Matt Bonner To A Sneaker Deal?

Matt Bonner is not the best player on the San Antonio Spurs. Hell, if you were putting together a list of the best players on the Spurs, you would probably go through more than half of the team before you got to Bonner’s name. He’s a hell of a three-point shooter. And he knows his role on the Spurs and plays it well. But he’s not the most talented guy on the court when he suits up for the Spurs.

With that in mind, you might be surprised to hear about which sneaker company just signed him to a deal. If we asked you to guess, you would probably throw out names like Pony or, like, Li-Ning, right? But you would be wrong. Because Bonner, who is one of the few players to ever rock New Balance sneakers on an NBA court, is now being sponsored by…adidas. Er, wait, WHAT?!

Yeah, that was our response, too. When we saw this tweet on Wednesday night, we were very confused:

But when you really sit back and think about it, it does make a little bit of sense. Bonner does, after all, have a pretty decent cult following in the NBA. He goes by the name “Red Mamba” (a playful nickname that pays homage to Kobe Bryant‘s nickname “Black Mamba” in any ironic sort of way) and fans cheer him on because of his red hair and because he doesn’t look like he should be quite as good as he is. But it’s also a little bit confusing. We can say with some level of certainty that Bonner is not going to get his own sneaker from adidas. So why did they sign him? To set the sneaker blogs on fire for a day?

Whatever the case, do you like the fact that adidas signed Bonner? Or do you think they should have chosen a different NBA player to give an adidas deal to? Let us know in the comments section below.
