Can You Believe Nike Dropped The Air Yeezy 2 “Red October” Out Of Nowhere Yesterday?
SURPRISE! THE NIKE AIR YEEZY 2 “RED OCTOBER” IS HERE!
That’s essentially what Nike did to sneakerheads yesterday when, seemingly out of nowhere, they went and released the “Red October” online for a very brief period of time without letting anyone know about it beforehand. There was no buildup for the sneakers. There were no rumors about them dropping. There was…nothing. One minute they were there, in all of their glory, on the Nike website. And the next minute? They were gone, all sold out, and popping up on eBay for $10,000+. It was all very surreal. And yet, we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
The “Red October” has been on everyone’s radar for the last nine months or so. Kanye West wore the sneakers during an appearance on Saturday Night Live last May. And ever since then, people have been clamoring for more information on them. That information has been few and far between and, truthfully, Nike never really got around to telling us much at all about the sneakers. All we knew that was that they would hopefully be released one day. But the rumored release dates came and went and came and went and came and went and…still no “Red October.”
To be honest, it got to be a little bit exhausting. It actually got so out of hand that, when the Yeezy 2s finally dropped yesterday, a sense of relief washed over the sneakerhead community. “Finally,” a lot of sneakerheads tweeted. “Now what’s next?”
There will be other sneakers. From Nike. From adidas. From Reebok. From, well, everyone. But we probably won’t see another sneaker like the Yeezy 2 “Red October” for a long, long, long time. The hype surrounding them was incredible. The buzz that they created was insane. And they were more than just sneakers. They were a symbol of what sneakers have turned into in 2014—prized possessions that came make or break a sneaker collection.
So if you got yours, congrats. If not, better luck next time. Er, make that, better luck on the next sneaker. Because the Yeezy 2 “Red Octobers” have come and gone. Surprise.
