How I Met Your Dad Casts Greta Gerwig As Lead

The How I Met Your Mother spinoff has found its star. In a somewhat surprising move, indie darling Greta Gerwig has been cast as the lead in How I Met Your Dad.

The series will follow the same basic idea as HIMYM (a protagonist describing in flashbacks how they met their spouse), but will introduce completely new characters. Gerwig will play Sally, who in a casting breakdown was described as:

“a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A break-up is inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give ‘good’ advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decide what’s best for her.”

The series comes from HIMYM‘s creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and the show’s executive producer Emily Spivey. Gerwig will be credited as a producer as well; and the co-writer of Frances Ha is also expected to contribute writing to the series.

Gerwig is not a familiar face on television or mainstream film. Her only other TV experience is as a voice actor on the animated series China, Il. And on the big screen, she is better know for indie films like Frances Ha, Lola Versus, and Greenberg, though she also appeared in No Strings Attached and opposite Russell Brand in Arthur.

However, her casting as a “female Peter Pan” is quite fitting with her previous roles. Slate says that it obtained a copy of the pilot script, and “it is very easy to picture Gerwig in the starring role.”
