About Last Night– Movie Review

About Last Night stars Kevin Hart and Regina Hall as one of the best on-screen couples in recent memory. Their volatile, uninhibited, and often inebriated relationship is hilarious, honest, and impossible to look away from. Unfortunately, they have about half as much screen time as Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant, who are ostensibly the leads. The film drags as the predictable “normal” relationship comes to the forefront, but About Last Night is still one of the more enjoyable films of its peers.

Bernie (Hart) and Danny (Ealy) are best friends who, like all movie dude friends, endlessly discuss the rules of hooking up and avoiding relationships. But when Bernie starts a new hookup with Joan (Hall), Danny falls hard for her roommate and friend Debbie (Bryant). The two couples navigate the ins and outs of love, trying to figure out how serious they want to get.

There’s also a subplot about Danny’s work and lingering emotional issues; both are well-intentioned and could have added more depth, but never really seem like more than long tangents.

The post-awards, pre-summer blockbuster season spawns a lot of date movies: not just romantic comedies, but buddy movies that guys can enjoy as well. About Last Night seems to combine some of the better parts of recent releases like Ride Along, which similarly starred Hart as a video game-playing man-child who has to grow up, but which produced little comedic chemistry between Hart and co-star Ice Cube; and That Awkward Moment, the Zac Efron vehicle about bro man-children trying to avoid relationships but falling in love anyway, which hit rom-com cliches even more than this latest release. And the upcoming Think Like A Man Too, also starring Hart, Ealy, and Hall, shows that the current crop will continue at least through the summer. But About Last Night stands out a bit thanks to its cast, and also due fast-paced, creative editing which keeps some clever dialogue moving along briskly early in the film.
