Lorde is royally sick of herself.

The 17-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer from New Zealand shot to fame in 2013 thanks to the success of her debut single “Royals.” But now, the New Zealand native says she’s ready to give Americans a break from her sound. For Vs Music Issue the teen lets her hair down, covering the issue in a Chanel dress and David Yurman jewels. And inside, Lorde reveals what’s next in her plan for world domination.

“I want to let people stop hearing Lorde on the radio all the time, because it’s kind of crazy at the moment,” she said. “I’d like to give people a little bit of breathing room before I unleash something different.”

The high-school student, born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, prides herself on an ability to change things up and a wisdom beyond her years.

“I’ve always hung out with people older than me, with my parents’ friends,” she said, “because I appreciated the conversation. And even now, although I have heaps of friends in high school, I also hang out with a lot of older people. And sometimes with them, I’m like, ‘God, this is boring!’ But it means that I get to have these stimulating encounters with people that I idolize, which is cool.”

Now with a new set of celebrity friends, the singer realizes that she is music royalty, making her out of touch with the lyrics that made her famous. “You’re right, it is at odds with what I write about, and the reality of my life until a few months ago,” she admitted. “But when I go home, I still do all the stuff I used to do. I dunno…part of me feels like it’s weird to just get sucked into that world.”
