Mississippi Man Declared Dead, Found Alive In Body Bag
A Mississippi man is recovering in the hospital after being declared dead. Walter Williams, 78, of Lexington, MS, was transported to a funeral home in a body bag and found alive as the embalming process was about to start.
Williams, a local farmer, was reportedly found with no pulse in his home by his hospice nurse, who called the coroner. The coroner pronounced the man dead, and staff from a local funeral home transported the body away. After discovering the man breathing, the staff of Porter & Sons Funeral Home immediately called paramedics.
Williams’ nephew Eddie Hester described the confusion: “My cousin called me and said, ‘Not yet,’ and I said, ‘What you mean not yet?’ He said, ‘Daddy still here.’”
County Coroner Dexter Howard has described the event as a “miracle,” but also speculated that Williams pacemaker stopped and then restarted. Howard, who pronounced Williams dead in the home, is not a medical doctor, like many coroners across the country.
Howard visited Williams on Thursday, saying he was talking, but “still weak.”
