Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis & Cameron Diaz Hit Hard In The First Trailer For Annie Remake
If your name is Jay-Z or Will Smith, life is anything but hard knocks.
The two hip-hop Hollywood heavyweights have joined forces to remake the 1980s musical Annie. And from the looks of the first official trailer, the new version is hitting all the right notes. Starring Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts Of The Southern Wild) in the title role, Annie’s frizzy red hair is replaced by an updated curly afro as the orphan girl goes in search of a home to call her own while navigating the mean streets of New York in 2014. The 10-year-old took over the role from Willow Smith after the “Whip My Hair” singer unexpectedly dropped the role.
“Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz),” says the film’s official synopsis.
“But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx)—advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale)—makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes the 11-year-old in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.”
Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A), the Broadway classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen on Christmas Day.
