Did Johnny Manziel Make The Right Decision By Signing With Nike?

Submitted by on March 9, 2014 – 10:00 am3 Comments

All throughout his college career, Johnny Manziel wore nothing but adidas. Because he played for Texas A&M and because Texas A&M was sponsored by adidas, Johnny Football wore adidas while he played college ball. But now that he’s decided to forego the rest of his college eligibility in order to play professional football, Manziel has decided not to wear adidas in the NFL. Instead, he’s going to be wearing nothing but—drumroll, please!—Nike. Much like his soon-to-be fellow NFL quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick, Drew Brees, and Russell Wilson, Manziel is now down with the Swoosh.

Manziel may have ended up running with Nike, but that was far from the only sneaker company to pursue him. Over the course of the last couple of months, Under Armour, New Balance, and, of course, adidas all reached out to Manziel in order to try and get him to sign with them. But for whatever reason, Manziel decided that he wanted to get down with Nike. So he had his new marketing manager Maverick Carter—who just so happens to be BFFs with LeBron James, another Nike athlete—negotiate a deal with the company.

We can’t say that we’re all that surprised about Manziel’s decision to sign with Nike. He is, after all, a guy who wants to become a superstar in the NFL. And Nike seems to be the sneaker brand that most superstar athletes flock to. But we also think that he has worn adidas so often in the past that he might have been better off signing with the Three Stripes. They’re already familiar with working with him, so it might have been better for him to roll with adidas as he prepares to enter the NFL.

What do you think about Manziel signing with Nike? Are you surprised by it? Or did you pretty much expect him to pick the Swoosh when it came time to sign with a sneaker company? Let us know in the comments section below.

I think he made a dumb decision to sign with Nike. Johnny Manziel is a guy who seems to love recognition, love being different and in the spotlight. Whether you are a Nike athlete or not, Nike sponsors every player in the NFL, and they all dawn everything but shoes for the company. And the majority of players are given Nike cleats. Until I read this article, I only knew of Calvin Johnson as a Nike sponsored NFL player, as I’ve seen him in a commercial. Otherwise, you have no idea who is and isn’t sponsored by Nike, because everyone wears it.

Cam Newton on the other hand is synonymous for his deal with Under Armour. and Tom Brady can also be seen wearing the newest competitor to Nike in the NFL. The most popular cleat in the world, and most highly worn/bought shoe in all of youth football is the Under Armour Highlight Cleat. Going to Under Armour, Johnny could of been “THE GUY” alongside Cam Newton. Next to every NFL player in the NFL, JOhnny will now just be another guy wearing the swoosh. And behind Lebron, Kobe, KD, Tiger, Rory, Roger Federer, (insert huge Nike athlete here), etc., Johnny Manziel will be a little tadpole swimming in the ocean of Nike athletes.

With Under Armour, Johnny would get an incredible amount of attention, be among the likes of George St Pierre, Cam, Tom Brady, Bryce Harper, and Stephan Curry, big name athletes in their respective leauges (a much shorter and actually complete list compared to Nike), and be given acknowledgement as a brand ambassador and face of a brand. Not a bad way to start getting notoriety before hitting the field.

I think Johnny made a quick decision, and went with the money, which Nike can throw away pretty easily making 26 billion a year. They can flaunt his name all they want, but at the end of the day, Johnny Football takes a big backseat to the likes of Lebron, Kevin Durant, Tiger and Rory, Colin Capernick, and the reigning Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson, not to mention the countless universities and other stars Nike has. Good luck fending your way through the crowd Johnny.

Manziel went with Nike because he love Nikes and sneakers, Not to make a quick buck. He’s rich already and comes from money, he could’ve made more money signing with adidas or under armour. Some athletes choose to endorse stuff they actually like instead of wearing ugly adidas or reeboks for more money, look up kevin durant, he turned down millions of dollars more so he could sign with nike.

Also, not EVERY nfl player is sponsored by nike. Nike is the current uniform supplier for the nfl, so part of that deal are standard issue cleats if players want to wear them. Being sponsored is totally different, you get paid to wear and endorse the product and if they really think you’re marketable, they even work with you on a signature line, like calvin johnson.
