Did Johnny Manziel Make The Right Decision By Signing With Nike?
All throughout his college career, Johnny Manziel wore nothing but adidas. Because he played for Texas A&M and because Texas A&M was sponsored by adidas, Johnny Football wore adidas while he played college ball. But now that he’s decided to forego the rest of his college eligibility in order to play professional football, Manziel has decided not to wear adidas in the NFL. Instead, he’s going to be wearing nothing but—drumroll, please!—Nike. Much like his soon-to-be fellow NFL quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick, Drew Brees, and Russell Wilson, Manziel is now down with the Swoosh.
Manziel may have ended up running with Nike, but that was far from the only sneaker company to pursue him. Over the course of the last couple of months, Under Armour, New Balance, and, of course, adidas all reached out to Manziel in order to try and get him to sign with them. But for whatever reason, Manziel decided that he wanted to get down with Nike. So he had his new marketing manager Maverick Carter—who just so happens to be BFFs with LeBron James, another Nike athlete—negotiate a deal with the company.
We can’t say that we’re all that surprised about Manziel’s decision to sign with Nike. He is, after all, a guy who wants to become a superstar in the NFL. And Nike seems to be the sneaker brand that most superstar athletes flock to. But we also think that he has worn adidas so often in the past that he might have been better off signing with the Three Stripes. They’re already familiar with working with him, so it might have been better for him to roll with adidas as he prepares to enter the NFL.
