SNL Recruits Liam Neeson To Take On Vladimir Putin

Saturday Night Live opened this week with its usual spot-in skewering of the most pressing news stories, which this week meant Russia’s military intervention in the Crimean peninsula of the Ukraine. President Obama (Jay Pharaoh) brought in a special friend to stand up to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin: action star Liam Neeson.

In his signature gravelly baritone, Neeson warned the Russian president that he possessed a “very particular set of skills”- namely, using his Hollywood connections to make life uncomfortable for Putin.

The two then introduced a video, with Pharaoh-as-Obama recreating many of Putin’s memorably staged macho moments, including riding on horseback while shirtless, defeating opponents in judo, and wrestling a bear.

While some SNL cameos can seem forced, this one lined up very nicely. The two national leaders have faced many comparisons recently, and Neeson (whose latest shoot-em-up hostage thriller came out just last week) has the perfect screen persona to parody the situation.

Host Lena Dunham and the rest of the cast also earned raves for sketches including a send up of the impossibly fast, competent, beautiful, and multi-ethnic characters on ABC’s hit show Scandal; and Dunham channeling Liza Minnelli.
