The 5 Biggest Surprises Of NFL Free Agency (So Far)

Yesterday was the first day of the new NFL calendar. And what a wild day it was. Late in the afternoon, NFL free agency officially began, and there were dozens and dozens of transactions being reported every single hour. A lot of them involved relatively minor players in the grand scheme of things. But there were also more than a few transactions that took place that were very surprising.

To prove this, we took a look at all of the transactions that took place yesterday and picked out some of the ones that were surprising to us. At this point, there really shouldn’t be anything that surprises us when it comes to the NFL. But we definitely didn’t see these transactions coming when we woke up yesterday.

1. Former New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib signing a contract with the Denver Broncos.

Talib was a pleasant surprise for the Pats last year. He was dealt to New England by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and, over the course of the year, transformed himself into one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Now, he’s running with a team that was thisclose to winning the Super Bowl last season. That should once again make the Broncos the favorite to win the big game next February.

2. Former Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd signing a deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Heading into the free agency period, the Saints didn’t have much money to spend. So the thought was that they wouldn’t be able to make a big splash. But they managed to do it by landing Byrd and giving a big boost to their secondary.

3. The Dallas Cowboys deciding to part ways with DeMarcus Ware.

Ware accumulated 117 sacks in Dallas over nine seasons and is the all-time sack leader in big D. So we were surprised to hear that the Cowboys were letting him go yesterday, even though we know he’s suffered through a lot of injuries in recent years. Even more surprising is the fact that the Broncos are reportedly interested in signing him to bolster their defensive line.

4. The Jacksonville Jaguars trading Blaine Gabbert to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

The Blaine Gabbert experiment is officially over in Jacksonville. Does this mean that they’re definitely going to draft a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft? It sure seems like it.

5. Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin getting dealt to the 49ers.

We thought that Martin’s career in the NFL might be over after the scandal involving him and Richie Incognito. But now that Martin has been reunited with his college coach Jim Harbaugh, his career might just be getting started. What a surprise.
