Wayne Knight: Not Dead, Rumors A Hoax

Actor Wayne Knight is not dead. The man best known for his performance as Jerry’s archnemesis Newman on Seinfeld had to take to Twitter to dispel rumors of his demise in a car accident over the weekend.

“Some of you will be glad to hear this, others strangely disappointed, but….I am alive and well!” he tweeted from his verified account, adding, “Does someone have to DIE to trend? Geez!  Thanks for all the love everybody.  I didn’t know you cared. Glad to be breathing!”

The rumor originated at a fake Us Weekly website, and its partnered fake TMZ site. The hoax article was fairly in depth, providing numerous details about the supposed collision with a tractor-trailer near the Pennsylvania-New York border. Sadly, it seems it was based on a real lethal accident that occurred this week, not involving Knight.

The article even contains an update acknowledging Knight’s tweets, saying the “information” is a hoax. The motivation behind the prank is unclear, but the heavy ads on the site suggest a desire to generate web traffic.

However, not motivation is necessarily needed for a celebrity to be the center of a death hoax. Chumlee, of reality TV’s Pawn Stars, denied similar rumors just last week.
