The NBA Is Exploring The Idea Of Adding Advertising To Jerseys Again

About two years ago, the NBA kicked around the idea of adding advertising to its jerseys, much like soccer teams do over in Europe. They didn’t want to add large logos to their jerseys or anything that was too intrusive. But if you’ve ever seen an NBA jersey, then you know how much wasted space they have on them. There is plenty of room to put a few extra patches on them without crowding the jerseys. So the thought was that the NBA would sell the extra space that they have on their jerseys to the highest bidder and create an additional source of income for themselves.

In the end, the NBA decided not to add advertising at the time. They didn’t think that it was a good idea to do it. But they didn’t close the door on the idea completely. And as of right now, it sounds like they might be thinking about doing it again. Last week, new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver came out and revealed that he fully expects the league to add ads to its jerseys within the next five years.

“It just creates that much more of an opportunity for our marketing partners to get that much closer to our fans and to our players,” Silver said. “It gives us an opportunity just to have deeper integration when it comes to those forms of sponsorship.”

Silver is right, too. Putting ads on jerseys would increase the league’s reach as far as advertising is concerned. And more importantly, it would put an estimated $100 million into the league’s pockets every year as well. But is it really a good idea to put ads on jerseys?

Obviously, it’s not something that people want to see. People don’t like the idea of being forced to look at ads. But it sounds like it could be a necessary evil for the league. People won’t like the advertising at first. But once it becomes normal, they won’t even notice it anymore. Or at least, they won’t notice how much it bothers them. And it will help the league make more money and, in turn, help the league continue to put out a superior product. So you’d better get used to the idea of ads on jerseys. Because sooner or later, they’re going to be there.
