Is The NFL In Danger Of Imploding Sometime In The Not-So-Distant Future As Mark Cuban Suggests?

The NFL is, hands down, the most popular sports league in America right now. People love other sports leagues like the NBA and MLB (and, to a much lesser degree, the NHL), but people love the NFL. From September through February, they plan their entire lives around what time their favorite team is playing on Sunday afternoons or, hell, what time every single player on their fantasy football team is playing. And they spend nearly all of their free time either thinking about or talking about football. America has fallen deeply, madly, head-over-heels in love with the sport.

With that in mind, the NFL wants to continue to capitalize off the sport’s popularity by expanding how often they hold games. As recently as a few years ago, Sunday afternoons and Monday nights were the only times you could watch NFL football. But as of right now, the NFL also broadcasts games on Thursday nights and there are plans to expand into Saturdays and Wednesdays as well. And if that happens, it’s going to be all NFL, all the time within the next year or two.

In theory, that should be a good thing. People love watching football, so giving people football on nights that they don’t currently get it should result in increased TV ratings and more popularity. But yesterday, Mark Cuban spoke out about the proposed changes and said that he thinks the NFL could potentially implode if they’re not careful.

“I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion,” he said. “I’m just telling you, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they’re getting hoggy. Just watch…When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I’m just telling you, when you’ve got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That’s rule number one of business.”

It may sound crazy. But Cuban is right here. While it makes perfect sense for the NFL to want to expand into other nights, the league needs to be careful about trying to do too much right now. Because if they get greedy and attempt to basically take over peoples’ lives, people are going to grow tired of watching games. They’ll still show up for the big ones. But over time, the appeal of, say, a Jaguars/Raiders game on a Tuesday night is going to lose its luster. And when that happens, there’s no turning back. The league is going to run the risk of seriously hurting its product.

What do you think? Should the NFL take Mark Cuban’s advice and scale back their plans to play football on weeknights? Or is Cuban just talking crazy right now?
