Lady Gaga “As You’ve Never Seen Her Before” On Porter: “There’s A Woman Behind The Wigs”
Lady Gaga is known for her outlandish costumes, out of this world make-up, and outrageous wig creations. But her latest look might be the most shocking one of all. For the second issue of Porter, the 28-year-old singer poses bare-faced for her friends, famed photography duo Inez & Vinoodh.
“It is often easy to forget that there is actually a young woman—and an exceptional musician—behind the wigs and the costumes, the hype and the theatrics,” explained Porter editor-in-chief Lucy Yeomans. “With these pictures, we wanted to reveal the woman behind the Lady, the artist behind the artifice. Indeed when I first saw Inez & Vinoodh‘s shot of Gaga wearing nothing but her grandmother’s vintage robe—the piece she often wears to write her music in—I just knew it had to be the cover. It felt authentic, personal and beautiful, and unlike any image I have seen of her before.”
In the behind-the-scenes video below, the artist born Stefani Germanotta bares her deepest thoughts on the sexuality of her musicality.
“My sexuality doesn’t play a big part in my life like that,” she says. “It’s much more of an animalistic, pure thing and I struggled with understanding it my whole life, since I felt more connected to male artists and more connected to rock ‘n’ roll and more connected to glam culture. Today, we tried wigs on, the ones that were more girly or pretty, I felt uncomfortable, since that’s not how I see my music. There is a certain power in ignoring pretense about sexual orientation or gender.”
She continues: “To me, a canvas doesn’t have gender, so if you are a vehicle, you have to annihilate all those preconceived notions. Some people are driven by their sexuality and it’s part of who they are but it’s just not for me. Being a woman is a secondary part of my existence. I’m much more concerned with my consciousness and knowing that I am my fans and my fans are me. We are each other. All people are connected. It’s all about compassion and love.”
