Revisiting the “Megan Draper/Sharon Tate” Theory of Mad Men

Season 7 of Mad Men begins on Sunday night, and the end of Season 6 offered new factors to consider when speculating on what lies ahead. In my mind, the exploding tensions between Megan and Don, and the entry of California into the equation, offers some of the strongest evidence yet that Megan might have a troubling connection with doomed Hollywood starlet Sharon Tate.

To recap the conspiracy theories: in the season 6 episode “The Better Half,” Megan was seen wearing a t-shirt identical to one worn by actress Tate in an iconic 1967 Esquire photo shoot. Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant later confirmed on Twitter that the choice was intentional, although clarifications seemed to emphasize fashion and politics, not dramatic foreshadowing.

In 1969, Tate was one of several people murdered by Charles Manson and his followers. She was eight months pregnant.

There were several other pieces of evidence suggesting a connection between Megan and Tate, but the t-shirt was the most obvious.

At the time, it seemed crazy. But in the final episode of last season, Don and Megan definitely seemed headed for a split — with Megan likely heading out to LA to further her successful acting career.

So Megan could actually be in Hollywood in 1969. And she’s not unknown; the star of a soap opera, it’s likely Megan would have some industry connections when she arrives. Is it so unbelievable she crosses paths with Tate?

This is less exacting evidence, but: killing off Megan in gruesome fashion seems like something series creator Matthew Weiner would do. He’s not afraid to introduce historical figures (like Conrad Hilton); and the series is obsessed with death and the random killings that seemed to end the dream of the 60′s. Also, moments like the lawn mower incident and Don’s feverish murder dream show Weiner isn’t afraid of veering into horror.

What do you think- is Megan a goner of the most gruesome kind?
