Mad Men Conspiracy Update

Last night’s season 7 premiere of Mad Men didn’t offer any huge shockers, but did help the audience catch up with the characters about two months after we left them last. Also, “Time Zones” offered plenty of fuel for some of fans’ favorite conspiracy theories.

*****SPOILERS AHEAD******

Last things first: the episode ended on a shot of Don, drunk and tired, shivering on his balcony in January. Looking outright pitiful, it suggested that Draper is embracing the darkness, pain, and his (literally) outsider status for a change, instead of cloaking it in conformity and happiness.

But the sight of a distraught Don striding out of his high-rise apartment probably gave a start to those who think the series will end with Don’s suicide. From the iconic image of the Falling Man from the opening credits, to Adam Whitman’s suicide, to the series’ preoccupation with death, many think that Don will literally fall by the end of the show.

Speaking of death, things didn’t necessarily look great for Megan either. She’s living in the hills overlooking LA, and Don ominously asked if she wouldn’t rather live in a less remote area, as coyotes howled in the background. For those who think Megan is a stand-in for the doomed Sharon Tate, who was murdered at a home in Benedict Canyon in 1969, the year this season is set.
