Are The Pacers Going To Be Able To Stop Playing Like “Wussies” Against The Hawks?

What in the world has happened to the Indiana Pacers?! It feels like we’ve asked ourselves that question over and over and over again over the course of the last few weeks. But over the weekend, we had to ask ourselves that question again after Paul George & Co. lost—in a blowout!—to the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. The Pacers got outplayed in the first half and were completely dominated in the second half, which led to Indiana getting routed at home to fall behind 0-1 in the series. And after the game, TNT analyst Charles Barkley had some really harsh criticism for the Pacers.

“I’ve got to call somebody out,” he said. “The Indiana Pacers. You guys talk all that noise all year, ‘We want home court,’ and then you come out [Saturday] night and play like dogs. You’ve got Larry Bird in your front office, you’ve got a terrific coach in Frank Vogel. I’m an Indiana fan, for everything y’all stand for, but to come out and play like flat wussies, and I’m only calling you guys ‘wussies’ because I don’t want to get the FCC [mad] at me…Come on, man, you’re better than that. You’re embarrassing Coach Vogel and the great Larry Bird.”

Barkley was 100 percent right in his assessment, too. The Pacers are playing like “wussies” right now, which is to say that they’e not showing a whole lot of heart out on the court. All season long, they have been one of the best defensive teams in the entire league. Yet, they gave up 101 points to a team that won just 38 games during the regular season. Granted, the Hawks did make the playoffs, so they’ve got some talent on their team. But the Pacers are a team that were expected by many to contend with the Miami Heat for the Eastern Conference crown this season. And now, they don’t even look like a team that’s going to advance out of the first round of the playoffs.

In order to get themselves back on track, the Pacers have to start by playing some spirited defense against the Hawks when they square off in Game 2 tomorrow night. They also have to stop settling for jump shots and take the ball to the hole. And above all else, they need to stop playing like “wussies” as Barkley put it. Otherwise, they’re going to be headed home early and their entire season is going to be a disappointment.

So are you guys up for the challenge or what?
