NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wasted no time in making his presence felt after taking over for David Stern. After the heinous racial comments Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was heard saying to girlfriend V. Stiviano on a recorded phone call, Silver acted swiftly and with authority.

Silver held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce that not only would Sterling be fined the maximum of $2.5 million dollars, but he was also hit with a lifetime ban from the NBA.

“We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views,” Silver said while making it no secret that he was disgusted by Sterling’s comments that stated he was not interested in having African Americans at his games. “They simply have no place in the NBA.”

It only took Silver three days to come to a decision after the league expressed outrage. There were talks of players boycotting games, Clippers coach Doc Rivers departing after the season and the possibility of players demanding their way off the team. But after Sterling admitted that it was his voice on the tapes and after careful deliberation, Silver decided that the best course of action was to ban Sterling from the league, effective immediately.

Sterling will not be able to attend NBA games or practices and cannot be involved with anything that has to do with the Clippers organization.

After the announcement, the Clippers website was all black with the simple message “We Are One” on the front page.

Silver said that he will also try to force Sterling to sell his organization by putting it to a vote by the owners. If the team is sold, the likes of Magic Johnson, Floyd Mayweather and Oprah Winfrey have all stepped up and said that they would like to purchase the franchise. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see the Clippers be sold to an African American owner?
