Twitter Introduces Mute Button

Submitted by on May 3, 2014 – 2:54 pm3 Comments

Everyone’s favorite microblogging site is making it easier than ever to keep up appearances. Some Twitter users are reporting a new “Mute” feature, that will block another users’ tweets without alerting them.

The feature has long been available on third-party mobile apps like Tweetbot and Tweetdeck, the latter of which was acquired by Twitter in 2011. And the “unsubscribe” feature on Facebook has allowed users to stealthily avoid connections, without outright disconnecting.

As Mashable points out, there are several reasons this feature might be useful: temporarily, it would come in handy if a friend is livetweeting an event, and overloading your feed, or including spoilers for your favorite show. In the longer term, it can help ignore a user that you have to follow for “work-related reasons.”

Then again, some just don’t want to deal with the drama of unfollowing a frenemy.

What do you think of this new feature? Will you bee muting some connections, or just unfollowing and dealing with the consequences?
