Is It Smart For Etonic To Re-Release Hakeem Olajuwon’s Akeem The Dream Signature Sneaker?
So this is certainly a surprise. Way back in 1984, long before sneaker companies handed out endorsement deals to everyone (seriously, are there any NBA players who don’t have a sneaker deal in 2014?), the sneaker company Etonic approached Akeem Olajuwon—the No. 1 pick in the 1984 NBA Draft—and offered him a sneaker deal. And even though Etonic wasn’t really known for creating quality basketball sneakers or basketball sneakers at all, Olajuwon agreed to the deal. The result? The Etonic Akeem the Dream signature sneaker that you see above. It didn’t feature a ton of technological advancements or anything. But it was designed to be the perfect sneaker for a big man who built a reputation for patrolling the paint and dominating on both sides of the ball.
And believe it or not, that Etonic sneaker is coming back. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Akeem the Dream sneaker, Etonic just announced that they are going to re-release it. Etonic as a whole is going to do their best to reenergize their company by releasing a collection of retro sneakers, and they’re going to start off by dropping the Akeem the Dream sneaker, with the hope that the nostalgia tied to the sneaker will give Etonic a much-needed jumpstart. It’s a risky move. But with just about every sneaker company out there dropping retro after retro after retro right now, it’s probably going to end up being one of the smartest things that Etonic has done in recent years. They will instantly thrust themselves back into the spotlight with the re-release of the Akeem the Dream.
Are you interested in picking up a pair, though? We have to admit: We like the idea of Etonic becoming a bigger player in the sneaker game, but we’re not sure that we’re going to be clamoring for a pair of these when they are released. Take a look at the Akeem the Dream colorways that will be dropping below and let us know what you think. Is the Akeem the Dream sneaker on your must-have list this year?
