President Obama, Joel McHale Toss Barbs At White House Correspondents’ Dinner

It’s that time of year again: Nerd Prom. On Saturday night, thousands of Washington insiders and Hollywood stars gathered ostensibly to celebrate the journalists who cover the White House- but mostly to gawk at each other and trade barbs.

“These days, House Republicans are actually giving John Boehner a harder time than they’re giving me,” said President Barack Obama of the embattled (and oddly tan) Speaker of the House, who often finds himself opposed to the young Tea Party caucus. “Which means orange really is the new black.”

While Obama’s best, most biting lines are usually reserved for his opponents (“Let’s face it, Fox…it’ll be harder to convince the American people that Hillary [Clinton] was born in Kenya.”), he did aim some at himself, including the embarrassing rollout of Healthcare.gov: “In 2008, my slogan was ‘Yes, we can.’ In 2013 my slogan was ‘control-alt-delete.’”

Host Joel McHale is well known as the snarky host of E!’s The Soup, and as the snarky lead of NBC’s Community. At the WHCD, he was, unsurprisingly, snarky: “It’s crazy to think that Joe Biden is only one heartbeat away from no one taking him seriously as president.”

Amidst the fun, the dinner did also posthumously honor Harry McAlpin, the first black reporter in the White House Press Corp.
