MLB Will Allow Players To Use Any Pink Bats On Mother’s Day This Year To Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

Last year, in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness, Major League Baseball encouraged its players to use pink bats on Mother’s Day. However, there was one catch: MLB wasn’t willing to allow players to use any old pink bat. Rather, they had to use pink bats created by MLB’s partner Louisville Slugger. And their decision to force players to use Louisville Slugger pink bats did not go over very well with players, specifically players who had other pink bats created for the big day. It turned into a bit of a nightmare for the league because what was supposed to be a nice gesture suddenly turned into a minor controversy as players were up in arms over MLB’s decision to force them to use pink Louisville Slugger bats. It was a huge distraction and took away from the overall mission of the pink bats.

Fortunately, MLB isn’t going to experience that again this year. Because late last week, they announced that players will once again be using pink bats to promote breast cancer awareness today. But they won’t be required to use a specific kind of bat. They can use whichever pink bat that they want—provided it’s a legal MLB bat—regardless of who made the bat or what it looks like.

“The fact that there was chatter about anything related to bats, who ought to be able to have a bat, and color and logo detracted from the primary cause—the sole cause—of the undertaking,” MLB’s executive vice president of business Tim Brosnan said. “The cause is to draw attention to the scourge of breast cancer.”

So this Mother’s Day, that cause will be front and center. There will be no talk about bats or pink bats or pink bats created by the wrong manufacturer. Instead, there will be talk about breast cancer and finding ways to treat and cure it. And that’s a great thing for MLB. So kudos to them for fixing last year’s problem and getting it right this Mother’s Day.
