What’s It Going To Take To Get The Washington Redskins To Change Their Team Name?

The Washington Redskins probably aren’t going to be the Washington Redskins for very much longer. Over the course of the last year or two, there have been a number of people who have spoken out against the Redskins name and asked the team to change it. And while the team’s owner Daniel Snyder has pretty much been dead set against the idea of adopting a new name for his team, we’re starting to get to the point where just about everyone thinks it would be a good idea for the ‘Skins to take on a new name. That includes NFL fans, Native Americans, and, most recently, U.S. senators.

Earlier this week, a group of 50 U.S. senators came together to write a letter to the NFL asking them to force the Redskins to change their name. In their letter, they talked about how swiftly the NBA acted when Donald Sterling got caught making racist remarks during a taped phone conversation. The NBA came out almost immediately and said that they were going to remove Sterling from the league. And the senators believe that the NFL should act just as swiftly to remove the Redskins team name from the league. They want NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to make it happen as soon as possible.

“The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” the senators said in their letter. “We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports.”

Will the letter actually result in any immediate change, though? That remains to be seen. But one thing seems to be certain: At some point in the future, the Redskins are going to have to change their name. It might not be this year or next year or five years from now. But the Redskins owner is fighting a losing battle. There are too many people who want the name changed and, honestly, it’s starting to become a distraction for the entire league. So Snyder should enjoy the Redskins name while he can, because it won’t be here forever.
