Can You Believe That Skechers Just Gave A Sneaker Endorsement Deal To The Horse California Chrome?

Late last month, Skechers announced that they had inked Pete Rose to an endorsement deal. And our exact reaction was “HUH?!?” It’s been years since the former Cincinnati Reds player was involved with Major League Baseball. So it seemed crazy for Skechers to give him a sneaker deal. But in recent months, Skechers has been targeting all of their marketing towards the older crowd. They understand that all of the kids out there today want Nike and adidas sneakers, so they don’t even bother trying to target those kids. Instead, they want those kids’ dads, uncles, and, hell, grandfathers to be wearing Skechers. It’s a pretty smart strategy and it’s helped Skechers do really well this year.

With all of that said, though, their latest endorsement deal is completely ridiculous. Skechers just agreed to sign a horse—yes, a horse—to a deal. That horse just so happens to be California Chrome, the horse that’s in contention to win a Triple Crown this year. But still, it’s a horse! And because horses don’t wear sneakers, it’s crazy to think that California Chrome is going to be walking around with a sneaker deal. There are legit star athletes who don’t have sneaker deals! But California Chrome does.

Skechers signing the horse might not be so crazy after all, though. They’re obviously not going to get the horse to wear sneakers. But they are going to outfit him with different things that have the Skechers logo on it. So over the course of the next few weeks, you’re going to see the Skechers logo almost every time you look at California Chrome. And because California Chrome is probably going to be everywhere—especially if the horse wins the Triple Crown—the endorsement deal that Skechers just gave the horse could turn out to be the smartest deal they hand out this year.

What do you think of California Chrome getting a sneaker endorsement deal? Is it a good move by Skechers—or are they wasting their money?
