Is Miss Indiana’s Body “Normal?”
Though Miss Nevada, Nia Sanchez, walked away with the crown at this week’s Miss USA competition, it was Miss Indiana that got the most attention. Mekayla Diehl became a hot topic on social media, as viewers described her body as more normally-proportioned than those of her competitors.
“I wanted to just continue a healthy lifestyle and inspire others to go after their dreams,” she told Fox & Friends. “I never imagined that it would be in a swimsuit.”
USA Today provides some context for how Diehl’s body type compares to that of the “average” American woman:
Diehl is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and wears a size 4, she tells The Indianapolis Star. (The average American woman wears a size 12, according to a 2009 survey by Women’s Wear Daily.)
Diehl put her body mass index at 18. (The average American woman’s BMI is 33, according to a 2012 report from the Centers for Disease Control.)
(Admittedly, height, weight, and dress size are not necessarily the best indicators; and BMI has been criticized as inaccurate.)
Still, next to her competitors, Diehl appears more full-bodied. Compare to Sanchez:
What do you think- is Diehl promoting a healthier or different body type?
