Should The Lakers Wait To See What LeBron James Does This Summer Before Hiring A New Head Coach?

While other NBA teams have been scrambling to fill their head coaching vacancies over the course of the last month or so, the Los Angeles Lakers have been unusually quiet. Their former head coach Mike D’Antoni resigned from his position back in late April, meaning the Lakers have had almost a month and a half now to replace him. But while the Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz, and New York Knicks have snatched up new head coaches recently, the Lakers have sat back and waited. And waited and waited and waited. And what exactly are they waiting for? Well, this week, we may have gotten our answer.

According to multiple reports, the Lakers are interested in making a big push to sign either Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James this summer. They desperately want to add another superstar to play alongside Kobe Bryant next season, so they’re going to do everything in their power to make it happen. However, that puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to finding a head coach. They obviously can’t go out and hire just anyone, because that coach could potentially clash with Carmelo or LeBron and make it difficult for the Lakers to sign one of the two stars. So at the moment, they’re taking a wait-and-see approach to the whole thing and putting off their coaching search. The thought is that they’ll be able to get just about anyone they want to coach the team, if Carmelo or LeBron signs. So they’re in no rush to ink a head coach to a deal at the moment.

The problem, of course, is that if the Lakers are unable to sign Carmelo, LeBron, or another superstar this summer, they could be in big trouble. It would give them very little chance of competing in the loaded Western Conference next season. But it would also limit their potential head coaching candidates. So it’s a big gamble on the part of the Lakers. But at this point, it’s a gamble that the Lakers probably have to take. Otherwise, they’re going to be destined to have another bad season. And that’s not what anyone in L.A. wants. So they need to take a risk when it comes to their head coaching situation this summer—and they have to hope that that risk pays off.

Do you think that the Lakers will ultimately be able to sign Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James to a deal? Or are they just wasting their time right now?
