Why Does The NFL Want To Move The NFL Draft To A City Other Than New York Next Year?

For the last few years now, the NFL has held their annual NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. And for the most part, it’s worked out really well for the league. Because so many media outlets are located in the Big Apple, the NFL Draft gets a ton of coverage every year in New York City and people flock to it from all over to watch it. Having the NFL Draft in New York City also makes it a really big deal for the NFL Draft entrants, who get to share the biggest moment of their lives on one of the biggest stages in the entire world. So why then is the NFL seriously considering moving the 2015 NFL Draft out of New York City?

For whatever reason, the NFL thinks that they could potentially make the draft even bigger in another host city. As it stands now, it sounds like they feel like holding the draft in NYC is getting old and that people aren’t as amazed by it as they could be if they held it in another city. Additionally, the NFL seems to think they could potentially create extra revenue by holding the draft in another city next year. So at the very least, they’re exploring their options right now and looking into holding the draft in a different city like Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, or even Dallas in 2015. It would be pretty crazy for them to leave New York City (and for the record, they are still considering a return to NYC). But there’s a very real possibility that the draft could take place somewhere other than New York next year.

If the NFL does move the draft in 2015, we think that they might be making a big mistake. The draft itself will still get covered to death by ESPN, the NFL Network, and all of the other sports-related media outlets out there. But there are also quite a few non-sports media outlets that might choose not to cover the draft because of where it’s being held. The NFL might also realize that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence and that NYC is and will always be the perfect place for them to hold the draft.

What do you think about the idea of the NFL holding the NFL Draft in a city other than New York? Is it a good idea to explore that option, or are they overthinking things right now?
