I guess I should pump my brakes and not get too excited about the news that Lifetime is working on a Aaliyah biopic. Apparently, the beloved “Try Again” singer’s family isn’t too happy that the network, best known for its all-women all-the-time programming, is moving forward with the project.

As we previously reported, Zendaya Coleman has been cast to portray Aaliyah in the film. But if Aaliyah’s family has their way, the made-for-TV movie won’t see the light of day. According to TMZ:

“Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, tells us the family is pissed that no one from the network contacted them about the movie.

Hankerson says the family will block any attempt on Lifetime’s part to use any of Aaliyah’s music. He says the family has hired a lawyer and will do everything they can to block release of the flick.”

Lifetime is also at odds with the family of Whitney Houston over their plans to bring a movie about the R&B icon to the small screen. Former America’s Next Top Model contestant-turned-actress Yaya DaCosta has been cast to portray Whitney, who died in 2012.

Production on the Aaliyah biopic is scheduled to begin later this summer.
