Pope Francis Excommunicates The Mafia

Pope Francis this week declared unequivocally that members of the Mafia are excommunicated from the Catholic Church. The statement came as the pontiff visited with the father of a 3-year-old boy slain by ongoing drug wars.

“Those who go down the evil path, as the Mafiosi do, are not in communion with God. They are excommunicated,” said Francis, referring specifically to southern Italy’s ’ndrangheta, a notorious drug trafficking and extortion gang. Francis spoke in a homily during Mass in the city of Sibari, in the Calabria region.

There, the boy was shot point blank while out with his grandfather and the grandfather’s girlfriend. All three were reportedly targeted over a debt.

The killing was unheard of even by Italy’s standards for Mafia killings. Both of the boys parents were in jail on drug charges; the mother is now out on house arrest, but Pope Francis visited with the incarcerated father.

It’s unclear of Francis excommunicated all global Mafioso, or just those from the ‘ndrangheta. It is also unclear if the excommunication, with the denial of holy sacraments, will actually be put into action by local priests.
