Is Carmelo Anthony Making The Right Move By Opting Out Of His Current Contract & Testing Free Agency?

Carmelo Anthony is ready to become an NBA free agent. According to multiple reports, Anthony has informed the New York Knicks, in writing, that he is going to opt out of his current contract and test the free agency market next month. He hasn’t announced this officially yet and, chances are, he won’t announce it until he actually opts out. But all indications are that Anthony is going to see which other teams are interested in his services for the next few seasons. And if one of those teams is able to give him the money he’s looking for as a free agent and an opportunity to win an NBA championship in the near future, then he could conceivably walk away from the Knicks and leave them high and dry.

If he goes that route, though, is that the best route to take? At this point, it really all depends on where he decides to sign. If he chooses to sign with, say, the Chicago Bulls and Derrick Rose is able to come back for the Bulls next season and remain healthy, then Anthony is probably making the right decision by leaving the Knicks. Same goes for if he signs with the Houston Rockets, a team that is probably just one piece away from being a really legitimate title contender. But if Anthony is going to sign with a team other than Knicks, he needs to be sure that that team is committed to winning a title within the next two or three years. Otherwise, he could very well find himself in the same position he’s in now. And if that’s the case, he’d be best served simply staying in the Big Apple.

Regardless of what Anthony ultimately decides to do, it’s clear that all eyes are going to be on him for the next few weeks. Where he decides to sign this summer is going to dictate where other NBA players sign, too, and who ends up having a real chance of winning a championship next season. So stay tuned to see where he ends up signing. It could very well determine how the next few NBA seasons will play out.
