Community To Return On Yahoo Screen
It looks like #SixSeasonsandaMovie still might happen. After being cancelled by NBC in May, cult hit series Community has been picked up for a sixth season by Yahoo Screen.
“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” said series creator and current show runner Dan Harmon said in a statement. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
Star Joel McHale added, “The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.” —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). # SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”
The hashtag #SixSeasonsandaMovie was popularized by fans online each time the show was rumored to be cancelled, and when it was actually cancelled. Many thought that the quirky comedy, which was always well received but struggled in ratings, would work better online with a service like Netflix or Hulu. And a precedent was set when Netflix aired a new season of Arrested Development after that show had been cancelled years earlier.
Yahoo Screen is the search engines video sharing site. It announced in April that it would begin producing original content, following the lead of the aforementioned Netflix and Hulu, and also Amazon, which began airing original shows this year.
