President Obama Signs Cell Phone Unlocking Law

Submitted by on August 2, 2014 – 10:44 am5 Comments

Unlocking cell phones is now once again legal in the US. President Barack Obama signed the bill, passed with bipartisan support in Congress, into law this week.

The practice had briefly been outlawed when the Library of Congress decided not to extended an exemption to copyright law covering the phones.

Unlocking allows devices to be used on different networks; it is important for users who travel or want to switch carriers. However, and industry spokesperson pointed out that unlocking alone does not mean that a device can switch to any network.

“Users should keep in mind unlocked does not necessarily mean interoperable, as carrier platforms and spectrum holdings vary,” said Jot Carpenter, vice president of government affairs at CTIA.
