Why Is LeBron James Losing So Much Weight This Offseason?

When LeBron James takes the court for the first time during the 2014-15 NBA season later this year, he’s going to look much, much different than he did the last time you saw him playing in the NBA. And it’s not going to have anything to do with the fact that he’s going to be wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey as opposed to a Miami Heat jersey, either. Rather, it’s going to be because LeBron is looking noticeably thinner right now—and has reportedly dropped a lot of weight over the course of the last two months or so. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, LeBron has completely cut carbohydrates out of his diet and, as a result, has lost a lot of weight.

And why has he shed so many pounds? We’re going to guess it’s not because he’s been trying to get a better beach body. Instead, it seems to be because LeBron wants to make sure that he doesn’t cramp up during games like he did during the 2014 NBA Finals. Additionally, LeBron seems to realize that losing a few pounds could potentially help him add a few more years to his basketball life later on. Less weight will equal less potential problems with his knees and feet and will help him feel better overall. So if that is, in fact, the reason why he’s losing so much weight, then it makes perfect sense for him to be doing it—even if he doesn’t strike us as a guy who needed to lose weight.

LeBron does need to be careful here, though. While we’re not going to second-guess his decision to lose a lot of weight just yet, LeBron is such a force in the NBA because he has a big, bulky frame but is still able to run around and keep up with smaller guys. It allows him to play just about any position and gives him an advantage over other players. So he needs to be careful about losing too much weight. It could present problems for him this season if he has to alter his game because of it.

But outside of that concern, it’s kind of crazy to see what LeBron is doing this summer. He’s not just working on his game, he’s also focusing on his health and his diet, which could mean that he’ll be an even better player next season. And if he is, the rest of the league better watch out. Because his jersey won’t be the only thing that’s different when he steps out onto the court this fall.
