UFC 178 is still over a month away but UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier have heightened interest due to their heated rivalry which bubbled over during a routine media day in Las Vegas.

Tempers have been running high for years between the two as Cormier has been chasing Jones down ever since the two met at UFC 121 backstage. Cormier felt that Jones disrespected him upon their first meeting and words have been exchanged through the media since then. Cormier vowed to get his hands on Jones. However, the problem was that the two fought in different weight classes. But Cormier recently dropped down to light heavyweight and has run through competition to put himself in line for a title shot. With an injury to Jones’ original opponent, Alexander Gustafsson, Cormier received the call for the showdown.

Verbal barbs have been traded between the two and a media day for their bout at UFC 178 took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It was a relatively routine session where reporters asked questions and fans were invited to watch as the main event and co-main event fighters stared each other down.

When Jones met Cormier, Jones nudged the shorter Cormier with his head and all bets were off. A retaliatory shove by Cormier led to Jones coming forward with punches as the UFC’s head of public relations, Dave Sholler, was sandwiched between the two heated fighters. It was an ugly brawl but it certainly thrust the UFC into the spotlight and generated interest in their September showdown.
